Welcome to our natural dog health page on our blog. I will be posting as much as possible, providing health, wellness and lifestyle tips and advice for our canine friends to live long healthy lives.
First let me introduce myself.
My name is Michaela Sparrow and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy, whilst also currently completing the ACAAM certification with the Australasian Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, which will allow me to be have ABAAHP board certification as a health practitioner with the American Academy of Anti-Aging medicine.
So basically you could say my passion is anti-aging medicine, longevity and disease prevention.
How does this link in with dog health?
Well first of all I am a crazy dog lady. I have two bulldogs myself and have been active in bulldog rescue for over two years.
Ever since I got my first bulldog Motley, my first born child, I have been obsessed with keeping him healthy, and keeping him around for as long as possible. Why? Because I see my dogs as my children and if I can spend 20 years with them I will be so happy.
So that is where my journey with natural dog health began, with my background in Naturopathic studies.
(If you aren’t sure what naturopathy is, basically we treat humans/animals in a holistic manner, treating the cause of disease not just symptoms, and providing a life style that helps prevent disease with herbs, nutrition and other lifestyle modifications)
It started with researching the best diet I personally could find my for dogs, that was also convenient and affordable. Motley had severe skin allergies and changing his diet to a raw natural one significantly improved his skin.
This was after many rounds of anti-biotics and steroids that only helped for a little bit before the skin issues ended up coming back.
I absolutely hated seeing him itchy and uncomfortable and it also concerned me that his immune system was being severely compromised with the amount of anti-biotic she had been given.
He also suffered from severe fungal infections and inter-digital cysts, again most treatments would only work for a bit before they would flare up again.
Using my knowledge from my Naturopathic studies I began implementing other treatments that where safe to use in dogs such as probiotics, coconut oil, natural anti-inflammatories such as turmeric and other dog friendly herbs. I finally found the right balance and now 5 years later we are incident free.
It was during this process of treating my boy, that I began working as a “Vitamin Consultant” in a large national chemist.
This role involved me assisting customers choose the right vitamins and supplements, and with my training in Naturopathy I felt it was my duty to provide the most honest information and would only recommend brands and products that I believed where of the best quality and of the highest therapeutic value.
The interesting fact in this story is the amount of people that would come in looking for health advice and supplements for their sick pets, particularly many elderly people who couldn’t afford vet bills, but couldn’t bare the thought of seeing their loved ones suffer.
It was a wonderful time in my working career, getting to chat to people recommending products and having those customers come back giving only positive feedback on the amazing results their pets had from such simple and affordable recommendations.
This is when I realized I needed to start helping animals along with humans. So while I’m still studying my degree and specializations, I will be embarking on the ‘Small Animal Naturopathic Diploma” at the beginning of 2017, so I will be fully qualified and able to help as many people as possible heal their loved fur babies.
I will be posting as often as possible, safe, easy and affordable, nutrition/diet, supplementation and other lifestyle treatments, with the current knowledge I have whilst also researching as many interventions as possible.
I want to help as many dogs as I can lead healthy and LONG lives and I believe it is possible! My biggest passion is Anti-Aging and Longevity for both humans but most of all for dogs! Lets see how many dogs lives we can extend and break the rules of dog longevity!
Here’s to a long healthy life for all our fur babies!
